  1. The Forget-Me-Knot was produced and originally broadcast as part of this series but since the mid Seventies has often been associated with Series 5 in re-run transmissions and home video releases on VHS and DVD. Only the most recent DVD and Blu-ray releases have offered it as part of Series 6. Additionally, three of Dave Rogers’ reference books and most website lists put the episode in Series 5 — as did I myself when I first made this website back in 1993! As it’s a cross-over episode with mixed associations, I list it in both Series 5 and 6.
Legend and cast lists
  • The television channels are listed with their acronym or short name, hovering over them will give you the full name. On small screens, these are automatically expanded as the table is redrawn.
  • The cast and crew lists are as complete as possible, and readers should note that they are often more informative than the originally broadcast credits; that is, I have included complete character names, if known, in place of a single name - the addition in italics - (e.g. “Esther Jones” instead of “Esther”); and uncredited characters are also listed. Some of these have been identified by a combination of script listings, call sheets, research and good luck; if you see a mistake or can identify someone, let us know.
Media and archive status

All episodes have been recovered from private collections and film libraries and are now available to the public on DVD or digital download.

Episodes are listed above in the order of first transmission by Granada, as used by Dave Rogers in his books. Other ITV regions followed more or less the same order, with a couple of episodes here and there in a different place. The early A&E DVDs were released in this order, whereas the current StudioCanal sets are almost in the the order of first broadcast by the ABC network in the USA.

Many of the scripts and promotional photos for the episodes are available as extras on recent DVD sets.

Production dates are from recovered paperwork but recent research by Mike Richardson has caused many of them to be revised. The production dates used here are from The Avengers Declassified. Bowler Hats and Kinky Boots (Mike Richardson, Telos Publishing 2014, First paperback edition) contains numerous variations:

Broadcasting
  • All ITV regions that were showing The Avengers at the time took a week’s break if the episode was going to fall between Christmas Eve and December 27 in 1968.
  • Three episodes were regularly pre-empted or moved to later timeslots by nervous programme controllers. The worst of these was My Wildest Dream which was deemed especially violent and mostly shown in timeslots after 10pm. The Rotters was widely replaced with The Morning After and shown later in the schedule, and Killer seems to have been replaced with Get-A-Way! in several regions.
  • Border Television:
    • If Border had followed other regions, they would have screened All Done with Mirrors on 24 November 1968, but they replaced it with a screening of Duel in the Sun instead. The showed the episode at the end of the run, squeezed in before the finale.
    • Border’s late December episodes were screened on December 22 and December 29 as they didn’t fall within the “Three Days of Christmas” scheduling that ITV had planned.
  • Channel Television:
  • Granada Television:
    • Granada got off to a late start, originally scheduling The Forget-Me-Knot for December 27 1968, but then delayed it for another two weeks, showing Man in a Suitcase instead.
  • Grampian Television:
    • Grampian scheduled The Rotters for January 10 1969 but it was replaced with The Morning After, it was broadcast on February 26 instead.
    • The Grampian schedule also lists Killer for both 24 January 1969 and 16 April 1969; it’s possible it was replaced with a repeat or different show in the earlier slot, or more likely that the repetition is a mistake and Requiem was shown on April 16. Requiem is the only episode not accounted for in the first run on Grampian but wasn’t completed until February. It is of course also possible that Requiem was left out of the Grampian run altogether, as it’s logical spot in the schedule would have been May 7 1969 on Grampian but all ITV regions screened a comedy special that night at 8pm - Frankie Howerd From the Poco a Poco Club, Stockport: Cancel all previous engagements. If they had been in line with other regions that pre-empted Killer, it would have been replaced by Get-A-Way! but that’s in their schedule for May 14 1969 (and maybe that is the repetition error and where Requiem finally screened.
    • Other researchers have suggested that The Interrogators was shown on Grampian on January 2 1969 but newspaper listings clearly show it being broadcast on January 1.
  • Harlech Television:
    • Harlech scheduled The Rotters for January 10 1969 but it was replaced with The Morning After. It was rescheduled for April 25 but again seems to have been replaced as it was finally broadcast on May 11 instead.
    • Killer was scheduled for January 24 1969 but pre-empted by Get-A-Way!. It was rescheduled near the end of the first run, on May 2 1969.
    • Bizarre was scheduled, and listed in all newspapers, for 9pm on May 30 1969 but ended up being broadcast on the following Monday, June 2nd, at 10.30pm. There was apparently an on screen announcement on May 30th informing viewers of the late change.
  • Ulster Television:
    • UTV scheduled The Rotters for January 10 1969 but it was replaced with The Morning After. It was rescheduled for April 25 but again seems to have been replaced as it was finally broadcast on May 16 instead.
    • Killer was scheduled for January 24 1969 but pre-empted, most probably by Get-A-Way!. It was rescheduled near the end of the first run, on May 2 1969, same as Harlech.
  • Westward Television:
    • Westward scheduled The Rotters for January 10 1969 but it was replaced with The Morning After. It was rescheduled for Jun 21 1969 as Westward took a three month break in broadcasting of The Avengers at the end of February.
    • Killer was scheduled for January 24 1969 but pre-empted, most probably by Get-A-Way!. It was rescheduled for June 28 instead.
  • Yorkshire Television:
    • Yorkshire scheduled The Rotters for January 10 1969 but it was replaced with The Morning After, it was rescheduled for 1st February 1969.
    • Who Was That Man I Saw You With? was originally scheduled for March 22 1969 but on Wednesday 19th March 1969 the YTV transmission mast at Emley Moor collapsed due to snow and ice build up. This cut broadcasts to the North and West of Yorkshire and Derbyshire. A temporary mast was fitted and Homicide and Old Lace was shown to a limited area, probably much to their chagrin (reception would have been poor is some areas - but reception of that episode has always been poor!) Who Was That Man I Saw You With? was eventually rescheduled for May 10 1969.
  • United States:
    • In the United States, The Morning After was scheduled for 27 January 1969, the last in the original run, but some sources state that it was pre-empted by the Annual Bing Crosby Golf Tournament. I can find no evidence that the tournament, which suffered from bad weather that year, was broadcast by ABC at all, and all newspapers I’ve checked for New York, Chicago and Los Angeles list the episode in both the weekly and daily television listings.
The Avengers Down-under

The Sydney Morning Herald was prone to spelling errors, regularly listing Linda Thorson as “Thorsen” and getting episode titles wrong, such as All Done with Mirrors rather hilariously misnamed as “All Alone with Mirrors”.

In Melbourne Get-A-Way! was scheduled for February 25 1969 but was replaced with Killer (incorrectly listed in The Age as “Killers”).

Melbourne abruptly stopped showing this series when there were only six episodes left to go, replacing it on May 15 1969 with the American import, The Ed Sullivan Show which had been doing well in Sydney in a 10.15pm timeslot. The last six episodes would eventually screen in February - March 1970, following on from the Steed’s Choice series of repeats.

On November 9 1969, the Sun Herald announced that the ABC would be re-running seven Diana Rigg episodes under the title of Steed’s Choice “chosen by Patrick Macnee himself”. These would then be followed by nine Linda Thorson episodes, much as Melbourne did (see above). However, after showing five of the Linda Thorson episodes, they abruptly replaced The Avengers with the dire American sitcom, The Governor and J.J., which lasted 18 episodes before being cut itself and rescheduled over a year later in a 6.30pm slot before being shunted into an afternoon and daytime filler slot. The four episodes that had not been shown from the re-run series were shown in a 10.20pm timeslot from 25 March to 15 April 1970.

No episodes from this series were ever repeated in Australia again.

  1. French contemporary listings for Fog all used the English title rather than the translation Brouillard now used on French releases.
  2. There is a Swiss listing that calls this episode Mademoiselle Pandora

The Spanish titles here are from contemporary newspaper listings and differ greatly from those used on DVD sets. Spain screen all but two episodes of this series, only bettered by the Netherlands, which showed every one. Holland showed The Forget-Me Knot as the last episode of their last run of series 5 in November 1969 then swiftly returned the series to air in January 1970 for thirteen episodes. Another six episodes were shown in October-December 1970, then the remaining episodes were shown starting in late January 1971.

France showed The Forget-Me Knot as the last episode of their last run of series 5 in October 1968, then returned with a 13 episode run from 4 October to 27 December 1969. A year later they showed another ten episodes from 10 October to 19 December 1970. Three years later, they tried again, screening three episodes on October 1973. The remaining six episodes finally stagggered onto French screends in the 1980s.

Switzerland fared worse, showing sixteen episodes in 1969, then six of those that had been missed in mid 1974. In Germany, ZDF decided it had had enough of the series after 10 episodes.

Italy did not see this series until Tele Torino International broadcast them in the 1980s and Italian Avengers fans had to make do with broadcasts from surrounding countries such as France or Yugoslavia. Sadly, Svizzera Italiana did not broadcast this series either.
