The Last of the
Cybernauts… ?
By Brian Clemens
John Steed has met the Cybernauts before — 10 years before, when Emma Peel was his assistant. Steed has almost forgotten the robot missiles which nearly killed them, and he has almost forgotten too, the double agent who, only a few months ago, was horribly burned in a car crash, trying to escape Steed, Purdey and Gambit.
Now the Cybernauts reappear, led by a half-man/half-machine, seeking vengeance on the Avengers … and Emma Peel’s ghost.

Continuity and trivia
In the pre-titles sequence, when everyone is singing Happy Birthday, we cut to a reverse mid shot and in that shot Joanna Lumley’s mouth is out of sync with her voice. It looks like she’s delivering a line that’s been dubbed out. Maybe they trimmed the scene a bit but ran on the audio.
During the carpark chase scene, you catch occasional glimpses of the camera crew on the edges of the carpark and, in one great shot through a car, reflected on the window panes.
Kane parks in the bay reserved for Nicholas Gillott, production manager for The Sweeney and The Professionals and unit manager for Hostage.
After Kane’s contact crashes his Peugeot into the Hillman Minx, Kane legs it for his own car - and runs past the contact’s Peugeot, undamaged and parked in a bay.
Near the end of the chase around the carpark, the purple Hillman Kane’s contact had crashed into can be seen, completely undamaged, in the background.
The wrecked car in Kane’s lair is not the Austin Westminster he was driving, so why is it there? It’s a 1950 Austin A135 Princess MkII
Kane loves to crush obviously feeble things - a completely rotten apple, and a clearly plastic toy gun thrown at him by Purdey.
This episode has a video Q&A and commentary with Renée Glynne and Philip Hawkins on the Lives in the Pictures YouTube channel.
