Not strictly to adventure this time, but such it is. It's actually the invitation to George Benstead's annual car rally, and reads:
GEORGE BENSTEAD
requests the pleasure of

A few Sixties motoring magazines, and a pile of invitations about to be sent out to rallying fiends.
Note that the top one is to a Wing Commander at RAF Hamelin, which was being closed down in the episode The Hour That Never Was, about two years before this episode. |

Steed's invitation

Too fuzzy to make out his address, I'm afraid - I'll see if the DVDs can give a better picture. Strangely, the address seem completely at odds with the "official" addresses of Cambridge Mews or Westminster Mews, except for the LONDON part. |

rock cakes

First thing in the post is a suspiciously heavy brown-paper wrapped box which Steed dismisses as rock cakes from his Auntie.
Given that "Auntie" is Ministry code for one's controller, it's quite possibly something else... |

A bloody invitation arrives for Steed, the prints matching those that the dying Danvers left on the pillar. Click on the image at right to see a close-up. |

racing simulator

George Benstead's pride and joy is his Brand's Hatch simulator, complete with electrified-seat Formula Ford racing car (or is a Formula 1 of the day? I have no idea).
The technology to have a film linked to the controls and motion detectors would have been a bit unlikely in 1968, but we'll let it pass. I'm more worried about the incredibly simplistic controls for the device, it looks like a cheap set of kitchen scales. |

Bates picks names from an old racing helmet before the event, in a room plastered with old number plates and a yellow Rolls Royce; and then sends them on their way dressed in blue serge and a bowler, waving a Union Jack. |

CLUE ONE: The Vaults at Mithering.
You are now entering the sleepy village on Mithering, head for "The Vaults" for the first clue. |

clue #2

...and here we are, Mrs Peel is the first to wander around to the other side of the pub sign to read the chalked-up clue:

Swingingdale

Here we are entering the sedate hamlet of Swingingdale. Look familiar? It should, the same village is used - renamed "Little Storping-in-the-Swuff" - in the episode Murdersville.

A misleading barrel point the way, to other barrels but the clue is hidden inside the barrel of an old shotgun.

A chest containing sensitive government documents and a pile of cash (eagerly absconded with by Penelope Plain), plus a bottle of Champagne for the principals. |
