The Supporting Cast
of Series 5 (1967-8)
of
The Avengers

A core personnel of actors and stunt people assisted the production of The Avengers. They often replaced the leads, not only in stunts, but also in long exteriors and minor action sequences, while the actors they were replacing were recording close-ups and dialogue. Often uncredited, always unheralded, these workhorses of the industry kept the series and the stars shining brightly.

This page makes particular reference to Peter J. Elliott, who may just have appeared in every episode of the season...

From Venus With Love
Or maybe not.
Still, there's the mysterious Martin, evil henchman of the villainous Dr Primble to ponder over. Just who is this man? I'm guess it's Terry Richards or someone, but I'm not sure. The same actor is the Executioner in "Escape in Time"
The Fear Merchants
Peter J. Elliott as Crawley's Chauffeur.
Peter J. Elliott is the stand-in/extra/stuntman for the show. I strongly suspect him of being in every episode at one point or another - we'll see if getting the DVDs will help me prove that. Here he briefly appears as an unconscious chauffeur, wearing a blonde wig.
Escape In Time
Rocky Taylor as Mitchell
There's a joke here - Rocky Taylor was regularly used as Patrick Macnee's stunt-double, so regularly impersonated Steed. In this episode, Mitchell (Taylor) is caught by Mrs Peel impersonating Steed for the body-switch at Mackiedockie Court. Life imitates art.
Or is it art imitates itself imitating life?

...and as 18th Century Soldier

...and as Josino's double

...and as an 18th Century philanderer
Here he is again! Can nothing stop this man?

Terry Plummer as Executioner

The See-Through Man
Peter J. Elliott as Embassy Guard
? as Lord Daviot
? as Major Alexandr Vazin
The Bird Who Knew Too Much
Peter J. Elliott, wearing an auburn wig, impersonates Mrs Peel for the scene where she dives off the high board into the pool. Peter Elliott was to go on to be an Olympic medallist in diving.

Also, Peter Brace, hard-working stuntman - he's still doing it today, 23 years later! - appeared as the short-lived spy, Percy Danvers. See him to better effect as one on the goons in "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (which also features Cyd Child, Diana Rigg's regular stunt double).
The Winged Avenger
The Living Dead
Alister Williamson as Tom
Peter J. Elliott - or maybe Peter Clay? as Gas mask-wearing agent

Look closely enough and you'll probably pick out all the members of Havoc in this bunch. I'll see if I can identify them properly in the fullness of time.

Alan Chuntz was one of the mainstays of British television, being a member of Havoc, a group of stuntspeople who performed on pretty much every series including Doctor Who, The Prisoner, Blakes Seven and The Avengers.

Arnold Ridley was the last of the great music hall artistes - best known and greatly loved for his rôle as the doddery eldest member of the Home Guard unit in Dad's Army.
? as NRU Security Man
? as Hospital Orderly
Epic
The Superlative Seven
Terry Plummer as Toy Sung
There are several uncredited actors and actresses at the beginning of the episode, playing Jessel's formidable fighters.
