What's New? |
A bit of bad news - Universal Video look to be delaying their Region 4 Avengers DVDs until "mid or late 2001". Feel free to try to change their mind - contact Tim Smith at the address below and tell him you want them earlier.
A bit of better news - Mike Cheyne let me know that the hired muscle in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station was called 'Georgie' by the conductor, so that page, plus the relevant Villains page and the Extras.
The look of the Extras page has been improved a bit, let's hope it continues to do so! I'm working on finishing the Props Department - all graphics are done, bar a few I've unaccountably missed or somehow lost from my hard drive. Expect it to be more complete soon.
Region 4 DVDs of The Avengers ?
Never, Never Say Die!
Tim Smith of Universal Video recently broached the subject of an Australian release, and lets hope it happens. Email Tim himself (it should be alright [LEGAL DISCLAIMER] to put his email here, he recently posted to the suburbia list as well).
In other news, I've publicly unveiled my Supporting Cast page, but it's very incomplete and downright ugly towards the end.
Any day now I'll finish it and the Props section.
With the aid of David K Smith's latest updates, I've named one of the stuntmen/extras who keeps turning up - in The Correct Way To Kill as Arkadi and in The £ 50,000 Breakfast as an unnamed killer - it's Romo Gorrara.
A few minor updates to the Motor Cars Guide, plus corrections and additions to The Winged Avenger (Steed's meal) and The Living Dead. Props pages 3 and 4, and the main page were also updated.
Whoops, should have checked I had the latest files to upload. the second page of props was distinctly unfinished, but it's a bit better now. Sorry about that!
Well, I've waited long enough - the props section goes on line today, even if half-finished. See it here. Pages 1 & 2 are complete - maybe too complete, pages 3 & 4 are in need of a bit of fleshing out of the text, and pages 5 though 8 are very much incomplete - I've done all the images, but none of the HTML or prose yet.
Also, I've noticed that The Avengers Forever! has recently updated with a history of the show in Germany, that puts the second half run of the colour Mrs Peel episodes in 1969 rather than 1968. I'm sticking with Stefan's timeline for now, until something more definite turns up. So, there's a minor update to the Intercrime page.
Still holding onto your hats? Good. It may be some time yet, unless I relent and put dreaded "under construction" pages up. I'm doing page 5 of 8 right now.
Otherwise, I've made a few corrections to The £50,000 Breakfast page and the Motor Cars Guide - I noticed two cars were incorrectly reported for that episode.
Also, the Intercrime page has the Spanish episode titles, as discovered on David K. Smith's "The Avengers Forever!" site.
The pop-up continues to dog me - IE users will just have to get used to lots of windows appearing, as windowvar.close() doesn't behave properly in IE. Again, any assistance offered is gratefully received.
Hold onto your hats, I may just have the props section ready any day now. I may also have a solution for the IE bug with my popup - thanks again to Dave. Updates sometime this week...
A fellow member of ProgSoc ,esydave commented favourably on the site, except for the pop-up window. He didn't like it always being the same size. So, armed with a couple of Perl scripts and a really good text editor, I've fixed this and more. All pages now have width and height tags for every image - speeding up loading of pages by as much as 75%, and every pop-up window call now resizes the window to suit the picture being displayed.
Slight Addendum:
The pop-up sizes correctly the first time you see it in IE4/5, but will not resize afterwards. Nor can one use a focus event on a window in IE. Anyone know a workaround?
Email me with any bugs you find, or if you just want to comment.
I've not stopped at just text updates either, although the graphic ones won't be obvious - I've replaced 18 images and added 15 new ones, generally smaller version of large images for use as inline graphics.
A perusal of LotusElan.net has disabused me as to the model of Mrs Peel's car - I thought there was an S2 S/E, but the S/E was only a variant of the S3 - so every single page mentioning her car - most of the episode pages and the Motor Cars Guide - has been updated.
On top of that, I've made a few changes to the pages for From Venus With Love and Escape In Time - the same actor plays Martin in the first, and the executioner in the other, but I still haven't named him. - and The £50,000 Breakfast (I've identified one of the farmhands who falls off the hay in the opening scene).
Added trivia about The Ipcress File to the Who's Who??? page.
The Intercrime page has been updated with Italian TX dates, from Marco Casadei's list available on The Avengers Forever!.
Added snippets of trivia and cast list amendments to The Bird Who Knew Too Much and Return of the Cybernauts. Also, a new listing on the Little Wonders page.
The site now has a search engine - I find it a trifle slower than I'd like, but it does the job. Find all the meaningless details you want, at the click of a single button. Try it out NOW and tell me what you think.
Stephen Vincent wrote informing us that Gareth Thomas (Blake in Blake's Seven) was the assassin with the sunglasses in Murdersville, and the A Sense of History page (the Episode Guide) looks much nicer now, with a bit of fiddling.
On a less obvious note, I've changed the CGI for the counters to make the site more portable, and finally updated some of the copy on the Other Episode Guides page.
Patrick Macnee's birthday to-day; happy birthday, sir!
The site has been registered with CJB.net, so now has the new URL of http://theavengers.cjb.net in addition to the usual one - please use it and assist this site - all links from the main page dismiss the annoying bar at the bottom.
The frames have been dispensed with, and the pictures are thrown to the lions pop-up window by a javascript call* rather than a targeted reference. This, combined with the new individual page headings, makes the title of the page actually represent what you're seeing.
Let us know what you think.
The guest cast list are complete, with the addition of 26 new mugshots and the replacement of another 41 I was unhappy with. updates therefore to :
The Fear Merchants, Escape in Time, The See-Through Man, The Bird Who Knew Too Much, The Winged Avenger, Never, Never Say Die, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station, Death's Door, The £50,000 Breakfast, Dead Man's Treasure, You Have Just Been Murdered, The Positive-Negative Man, Mission... Highly Improbable and The Forget-Me-Knot
Replaced a few mugshots in The Hidden Tiger the Correct Way To Kill (which I also edited slightly), The Return of the Cybernauts, The £50,000 Breakfast and Death's Door (which was also edited, along with the Motor Car Guide, to include pictures of the Alvis TE21 and Daimler limos from that episode (click on the numberplate column for the new images).
Another 8 cast member pictures have been added over the weekend, plus two more in the Fashion guide.
From Venus With Love, Escape In Time, The See-Through Man, Dead Man's Treasure and Mission... Highly Improbable; and Fashion Guide p.6 were updated.
What's new? Well you might ask! A fair amount, really. Every page of the Episode Guide has been changed to include a guest cast section, with mugshots of every cast member (within reason... I'm not screen-grabbing every extra or passerby). I still have a few gaps... I have no idea who Hallam is in You Have Just Been Murdered, and I missed a few other characters here and there.
All the links to the villains pages have been changed as well, so they go to the relevant part of the page, rather than the top. This has meant changes to the Killing Fields as well. Also, two more pictures in the Fashion Guide - the towel draped over Mrs Peel in From Venus With Love, and the green sleeveless dress worn by her in The £ 50,000 Breakfast.
Also, to make navigating your history list or bookmarks easier, the titles of pages within a section reflect their order in the hierarchy - a
1612 images | 84 text | 8 bins || 1704 files
If you click on the stamp on the envelope which appears on the Who's Who??? page, you'll see an enlarged photo of dissolute technologies as a happy bridal couple. Celebrating our first anniversary this week!
Well, all the duplicates are removed, cutting around 20 superfluous images out of the site, and all the broken links should be gone. So we're left with 1540 images (of which 372 are thumbnails and 108 are design elements), plus 75 pages of HTML, 5 scripts, 4 text files and 8 binaries. So that's a slightly more workable 1632 files, give or take a few, but it's still around the 16.5MB mark...
With a dearth of other work, I've gone through the entire site and fixed all those niggling missed broken links. Updating of 16 files was needed, although some of them were merely cosmetic changes. Now for the duplicate images...
A new link on The Little Wonders - to "Television Heaven", and some new trivia on the pages for The Fear Merchants, Epic and Mission... Highly Improbable
A monumental effort over the holiday break has brought all the episodes into line with the new format - stills of the titles, subtitles (if any) and the intro and outro have been added for every episode. These are generally not linked to bigger images, let your mouse be your guide. I've put borders around the clickable images as an extra hint.
Updates were also made to the Master Minds (including a nod at Scotty, a correspondent from Canada, who suggested the idea) and 'Death's Door', which is now a three page document rather than a single page, as I thought it was taking too long to load. All the murderer/victim information, both in the 'Death's Door' and the Episode Guide is now linked to the Diabolical Masterminds guide.
176 new images throughout, to celebrate whatever it was we all just went through. Add to that another 55 images I've replaced, and were looking at 230 new images, and 31 new html documents. And I thought I was on holidays...
All up, the site has 1893 images (including thumbnails), 8 binaries, 4 scripts and 80 text (HTML or otherwise) files, 1985 files in all - around 16.7MB of diskspace.
Happy New Year!
